Insight No. 08

The Eye Roll

What architects and contractors really think when they read your copy.

Innovative. Quality. Trusted. Durable. Industry-leading. Exceptional service.

Eye roll.

Your customers have heard it all before. And frankly, they don't believe it.

The problem isn't that these things aren't true. The problem is that everyone is making the same claims. Over and over again.

And when every brand sounds the same, buyers don't know who to believe or trust. You become another milquetoast brand that's easy to pass by.

Good Isn't Different. It's Just Plain Forgettable.

You make a quality product. Good. Cost of entry. Check. Check.

You care about your customers. We hope so. Prove it.

You've been innovating for decades. So have a lot of your competitors.

These things are all important, but they aren't necessarily what makes your brand stand out.

Strong positioning answers a much harder question:

Why should someone choose you instead of all the other perfectly good options available to them?

If your answer could just as easily appear on your competitor's website, you probably haven't found it yet.

Find Your Ownable Lane.

The way to stop the eye roll is to find out what problem they are trying to solve.

Maybe they can save time and money because your product is 50% faster to install. No eye roll there.

Maybe you have an engineering advantage, a patented technology or a manufacturing process that delivers better performance. They are listening.

Maybe it's your service and you can get product in their hands faster and cheaper than the competition. Now you are talking.

Sometimes the difference isn't obvious. You have to dig for it.

But once you find it, stop burying it underneath the same words everyone else is using.

Don't Just Say It. Prove It.

Calling yourself innovative doesn't make you innovative.

Calling yourself the leader doesn't make you the leader.

Calling your product the best doesn't make it the best.

Proof does.

Performance data. Patents. Case studies. Testimonials. Third-party validation. Better warranties. Faster installation. Faster lead times. Real-world results.

Give them something tangible that makes your claim believable.

Specific beats generic every time.

The Brandner Take

Your brand doesn't need more adjectives.

It needs a reason to be chosen. Don't bury it.

Listen to your customer. What would make your product stand apart? Figure out why your product matters. What can you claim that no one else, or very few, can?

Say it clearly. Prove it. And don't be afraid to sound different.

Because in a category where everyone is saying the same thing, it all becomes noise.

And nobody is listening.
